Day 8: 2026-05-14 Tanunda to Adelaide, then flight to Sydney
We tried the Apex Bakery for morning tea and then drove at a leisurely pace via rural backroads to Adelaide for the flight home. This area is a short distane to Adelaide and has many weekender and some communiters from Adelaide.
Tanunda is on the edge of the Barossa Valley and there were rolling hills with grape vines as well as grain and livestock agriculture. It is a very pretty part of Australia, though we were reminded by the char tree bark of the horrific summer fires that seem to regulary sweep through here.
Tanunda
Tanunda takes its name from an Aboriginal word meaning ‘water hole’.
1840s: Tanunda was founded in the 1840s by German-speaking immigrants seeking religious freedom.
1860: Chateau Tanunda is Australia’s oldest and largest chateau. Some of the oldest grapevines in the world can be found in vineyards surrounding Tanunda.
1924: Apex Bakery’s was established Family owned and run for 4 Generations wood-fired scotch oven has been continuously fired since 1924, baking Barossa recipes dating back to the 19th Century.
Tanunda is also famous for its century-old brass and marching band competition.

We dropped the car off at Apex Rental and had plenty of time for the shuttle bus to Adelaide Airport. The Virgin flight to Sydney was full and we arrived on time. The last sector of the trip was the 350 public bus home.
